Can You Progress Your Career By Going Offshore?

Do you feel like you've reached a stall point in your career? You’re not alone.

Over the last few years, The Great Reshuffle has probably delivered you and a bunch of other experts into a role where you’re all at the top of your income bracket, with no room for growth.

Day after day, you show up to work to complete a series of mindless and repetitive tasks (over and over);  wondering where your passion for work has gone. You used to love your job.

Now, you’re ready to try something new. Isn’t that right?

The Secret to Progressing Your Career

Rather than “throwing away” years of training and experience in pursuit of a role that doesn’t support your career goals… have you considered going offshore?

There are thousands of open positions for specialist employees just like you, including (but certainly not limited to):

  1. Mechanics

  2. Engineers

  3. Software Developers

  4. Electricians

  5. Technicians

  6. IT Support

  7. Data Analysts

  8. Scientists

  9. Programmers

An offshore job in any of these fields promises to be engaging, challenging and forward-thinking.

You’ll never suffer through the same day twice, with brand new challenges to overcome every single day. Goodbye, boredom.

The Benefits of Working Offshore

By transitioning to the offshore industry as an already skilled candidate, you’ll be filling a critically in-demand role onboard. This means that each of your needs will be met by your employer, with your voice being respected by those around you.

That’s not all.

As well as being a celebrated member of the team, offshore work will provide you with so many opportunities that weren’t options to you beforehand. How does seeing the world as you work sound? Great, right?

You’ll get to visit so many different locations - entirely depending on the projects you choose to be part of - accelerating your job satisfaction massively. You’ll get access to an array of benefits, a competitive salary, and even career progression opportunities.

Regardless of whether you want to dust off your leadership skills and supervise others or you want to expand your knowledge in a specific area of your field (such as ROV), the offshore sector will provide.

How to Get an Offshore Job

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Are you in the same industry you’re currently working in, bored of a rigid 9-5 schedule after finding yourself with no more prospects on the horizon?

Even if you once adored your job, too many years doing the same thing can make even the most passionate worker go stale.

You need to shake things up, adopting a change of pace. An offshore job will give you an “escape” from the life you currently know, taking your career to new heights.

Step 1. Update Your Resume

When was the last time you updated your CV? Has it been a month? Years?

Before starting to apply for offshore jobs, you need to make sure that your favourable background is evident to the recruiter on the other end. Be sure to highlight…

  • Certifications

  • Experience

  • Qualifications

  • Training

  • Past Employers

Given the challenging nature of most offshore projects, it’ll be a priority for employers to select a candidate like you that already has the skills required for the job.

You’ve already done the hard work, so don’t be afraid to show it off.

Step 2. Identify Your Ideal Job Title(s)

Depending on the background you’re coming from, there might be a few different offshore roles suitable for you.

A qualified technician, for example, might fit into any of the following positions…:

  1. Electrical Technician

  2. Service Technician

  3. Instrument Technician

  4. Mechanical Technician

  5. Maintenance Technician

  6. Survey Technician

  7. Operational Technician

  8. Production Technician

  9. Lab Technician

  10. Hydraulic Technician

  11. Robotics Technician

On top of this, there would also be Entry-Level, Mid-Level, and Senior-Level opportunities for you to choose from. It can get a little overwhelming.

Take your time to research the jobs available to you (reading through the descriptions to identify their specific requirements) and then pinpoint some suitable ones that would further your career.
