Isn’t it incredible to have watched the development of renewable energy over the last few years? Something that was once a distant dream is now a beautiful reality.

We should celebrate.

As of this year, nearly 28% of the world’s electricity production is produced by wind, tidal, and solar farms (Source: IEA). There’s no denying the impact this has had on reducing humanity’s reliance on harmful fossil fuels like coal and gas.

Now, we’re one step closer to creating a sustainable future for younger generations.

The Development of Renewable Offshore Projects

Today, investment is being funnelled heavily into renewable projects around the globe.

With a global market size of $881.7 billion in 2020 and an exciting projection of $1,977.6 billion by 2030 (Source: Allied Market Research), it’s no wonder.

Over the last few years, more and more projects have been proposed (and accepted) in countries like the UK, the United States, and China. This alludes to positive long-term growth for the industry as a whole.

Our Top 5 Renewable Offshore Projects (2022)

As such, let’s take a look at some of the innovative offshore energy projects leading the way.

1. The Dogger Bank Wind Farm (United Kingdom)

Due to be completed in 2026, Dogger Bank deserves a place on this list.

Forecasted to be the biggest offshore wind farm in the world (far outsizing Hornsea 2), this project has made headlines time and time again. Why? Because of its potential ability to power around 6 million homes in the UK.

First launched as a joint venture partnership between:

  • SSE Renewables (40%)

  • Equinor (40%)

  • Eni Plenitude (40%)

Dogger Bank’s claim on some of the world’s biggest turbines and the largest installation vessel has made the project a demonstration of just how far offshore energy has come.

2. The Perth Wave Power Project (Australia)

Australia is known for its beautiful beaches and sun, making it a hotspot for solar panels.

That’s not its only claim to fame.

The Perth Wave Power Project is the world’s first commercial-scale wave energy array that is not only connected to the grid… but has the ability to produce desalinated water; which could transform the quality of life for citizens across the world.

It consists of three 240 kW CETO 5 technologies and is directly owned by the Australian Department of Defence.

3. SolarDuck’s Floating Offshore Solar Farm (Belgium)

Revolutionary.

That’s the word that can describe SolarDuck’s investment in a floating solar farm that’s destined to “set sail” in 2023.

It is expected to have a capacity of 500kw and, as one of the first of its kind, has become a project that’s worth paying attention to. What’s more?

If all goes well, it could very well open the door for more offshore projects in the future.

“For countries with lower mean wind speeds but high solar irradiation, this opens up attractive opportunities. With the SolarDuck pilot, we are gaining experience with a highly innovative offshore floating solar technology. We want to contribute towards accelerating the energy transition, have a positive impact on marine ecology and help to integrate energy systems.”

- Sven Utermohlen (CEO at RWE Renewables)

4. Revolution Wind (United States)

Market-leader Orsted and Eversource have combined their influence to create Revolution Wind, a soon-to-be operational offshore project

At face value, there seems to be nothing particularly special about this collaboration. However, it aims to provide 100% of the energy demands of both Connecticut and Rhode Island… which would be a record-breaking achievement.

That’s not all. Rather than just investing in their own work, both companies have pledged a total of $250 million in additional funding to improve the infrastructure in the local area.

5. Hywind Scotland (United Kingdom)

The floating wind farm sector will hit $59.24 billion in value by 2027 (Source: GlobeNewswire).

There’s no doubt that the success of Hywind Scotland over the course of this last year has triggered this race.

Boasting five turbines, although small, it’s having a powerful impact on our industry - reminding us that we should continue to improve on the technologies we develop in order to create the most sustainable results possible.

Finally, we can’t complete this list without at least acknowledging some of our past favourites, such as Hornsea 1 and 2. These two projects have brought crucial investment and attention to the UK’s offshore industry.
